DRINKING WATER WARNING

1896 House Restaurant water is contaminated with E. coli

BOIL WATER ORDER IN EFFECT

We have been under a Boil Order since December 20, 2023, per the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). E. coli bacteria were found in the water supply from a sample collected from the distribution system on 12/19/2023. This sample was collected due to total coliform and E. coli. being present in the monthly routine samples. Fecal coliforms and E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems. Bacterial contamination can occur when increased run-off enters the drinking water source (for example, following heavy rains). It can also happen due to a break in the distribution system (pipes) or a failure in the water treatment process.

What is being done by the 1896 House Restaurant? We are bringing all water to a rolling boil for at least one (1) minute or using bottled water. Boiled or bottled water will be used for drinking, making ice, food preparation, washing dishes, and handwashing for employees and patrons until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

What is being done by MassDEP? We will be performing an assessment of the system to determine potential causes of the contamination and implement any corrective actions that are deemed necessary. We will reach out when tests show no bacteria, and the 1896 House Restaurant no longer needs to boil water. For more information, please contact Michael or Carrie Oring at 413-458-1896 or celebrate@1896house.com. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
